You can’t get married, the bible says so! That is the most common argument you hear from Christians against homosexuality. However did you know that a large swathe of religious folks are also racist and use the bible to validate their racism? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying EVERYONE is racist and/or homophobic if they are a Christian, I’m just saying I recently ave found out that A LOT of people are. Obviously I knew about the gay thing…that’s old news, however the racist thing sort of caught me off guard.
Who knew that a book written thousands of years ago, by multiple people, and has been loosely translated into English over the years could have such a damning impact on a modern society. I recently got into a debate on an unnamed web forum regarding the racist views of the “Christians” there. I was given several quotes from the bible to validate their views and opinions, and was told that “any non-white person was not even considered a person by biblical standards”. The part that baffled me the most is that “white Americans” were most definitely not in the bible. So when a white American uses the bible to justify their superior outlook it leaves me bewildered. Some of the verses I have been quoted are:
‘Behold, days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast.’
The people I talked with couldn’t comprehend that this meant man & animal. They were convinced that it meant to combine the two seeds and what type of seed would be compatible with man, besides man? That is only the start of the rabbit hole. Another good one was:
2 Peter 2 12:14
But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.
13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[e] 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood!
This one the argument was “What kind of beast could stare with adulterous eyes?” Even though it explicitly says “these people are like unreasoning animals” they still are convinced that they are referring to a “beast” and not a person.
There were several other verses they gave me but all were equally nonsensical. I don’t get how you can contort something that is that blatant into something else. If I say “That guy swims like a fish” I didn’t just call him a fish. I didn’t report to everyone I know that I just met a walking, talking fish.
Next on the list is homophobia. Good ol’ Leviticus.
“‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.
Leviticus also said not to wear mixed fabrics, and not to eat shellfish, and not to get tattoos, and many other things. Leviticus seems more like a foundation for a new world. Rules set by the ruling majority at the time. It could have been for personal comforts, personal tastes, personal gains. It could have been due to illness caused by seafood, or allergies due to certain fabrics. We will NEVER know the intent behind Leviticus. However, what we do know is that the rules set forth were abolished in Galatians. When he cast out the bondwoman and her son, meaning cast out the law and result of law: sin & death. We can jump ahead to AD/New testament and quote the following:
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
And there is Romans 1 & 2 which essentially says homosexuality is “without excuse” however to judge them is equally inexcusable. To sum it up, in an old world book it was written that homosexuality should be looked down on. While the new testament doesn’t go out and say sleep with whoever you want, it’s fine! It does say if man decides to lay with another man, mind your own fucking business.
I am willing to bet you can’t name 1 christian who currently doesn’t either:
A: Have a tattoo
B: Wear mixed fabric
C: Eat Shellfish
However I am also willing to bet that you wouldn’t have much trouble finding one to condemn homosexuality. You see people in restaurants or out in public in general praying together before a meal. Did you know that is also looked down on in the bible?
“When you pray, don’t be like hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners to pray so that everyone can see them. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.
The bible can be a good read. It was an old code. It was a way of life for an almost prehistoric culture. It is a book of parables and metaphors. To take anything that it says literally means you must take the entire book literally. Not pick and choose from it. If you take 1 verse and base your daily protest on that 1 verse, then you are a hypocrite. Period. It is not your place to preach to me, it is not my place to preach to you.
I will leave you with this:
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
